AN INVESTMENT TO CONSIDER

The following investment advice came to DH in an email from an old friend…..

If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago you would have $49.00 left.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have $214.00 cash.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

It’s called the 401-Keg

A recent study found the average American walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found Americans drink, on the average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon.

Makes You Proud To Be An American!

WEDNESDAY HERO

This Week’s Post Was Suggested And Written By Kathi

SSgt. Renee A. Deville

SSgt. Renee A. Deville
44 years old from Webster New York
401st Civil Affairs Battalion
September 1, 2008

U.S. Army

SSGT Renee A. Deville was an Army Reservist who deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 401st Civil Affairs Battalion from Webster, N.Y. She arrived at Walter Reed August 10, 2006, after being injured in a mortar attack.

While at Walter Reed, Deville was assigned to Chosen Battery, Warrior Transition Brigade, and was among three graduates of the Army’s first Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course Stand Alone Common Core offered to Warriors in Transition.

Deville, who successfully completed every aspect of the course from a wheelchair, was lauded by SGT Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston as exemplifying the Army’s ‘Warrior Ethos’, at the graduation ceremony for the course on March 28, 2008.

Deville was also the impetus for a new playground being built behind the Mologne House at Walter Reed in 2007.

An October 2007 Washington Post article about the opening of the playground says that SSGT Deville’s mention of her children’s limited recreational options to Col. Bruce Haselden, the garrison commander, helped set in motion the playground project.

Staff Sgt. Renee Antoinette Deville died September 1, 2008 in her room at the Mologne House at Walter Reed. She was 44.

She is survived by her husband and 4 children, her mother, a brother, and two sisters.

SSGT Deville was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery on September 19, 2008.

IRRESISTABLE...SARAH

My good friend Katy often sends something funny or inspiring on Fridays, so,  I’m sending this video to her. I really should be getting ready for work…but first I took a little spin around my favorite sites. Not sure how I got to Ushanka but it was worth the detour and I’ll be going back. (Disclaimer…they do know the bikini picture is a photoshop…and it does fit the video.) (And I always did like Robert Palmer.)

Have a great weekend…I’ll be at work :-)

11 SEPTEMBER...NEVER FORGET

“Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, What should be the reward of such sacrifices? Bid us and our posterity bow the knee, supplicate the friendship, and plow, and sow, and reap, to glut the avarice of the men who have let loose on us the dogs of war to riot in our blood and hunt us from the face of the earth? If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom–go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”

Samuel Adams

Speech, State House of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (1 August 1776)

NEVER FORGET 9/11 CEREMONY AND RIDE...EASTLAKE, OHIO

DH and I headed out this morning in the rain that kept falling…until we got to Eastlake…right behind a group of bikes headed for the ceremony.  It was sponsored by Western Reserve Harley-Davidson.

Eastlake’s Boulevard of 500 Flags honoring…everyday…the veterans from the Eastlake area.  (I can’t describe the rush of emotion that came over me at the sight of all those flags.)

The ceremony began with Rev. Rich Bartley, Blue Knights Chaplain giving the invocation.  Jim Mantel of WGAR and Monica Robins of WKYC were there.  Monica sang the National Anthem…goosebumps!  Speakers were Robbie Senatore from the New York City Fire Department who lost 343 of his fellow firefighters on 9/11,  Detective Andy Ezzo of the Cleveland Police Department and Bob Smith whose son, Colin was seriously injured in Iraq.  Sadly, the sound system left a lot to be desired and it was difficult to hear most of the speakers.  The ceremony concluded with a 21 gun salute to all of our fallen heroes.  Amazing Grace was played by the Cleveland Firefighters Memorial Pipes and Drums.

While standing at the memorial… part of which is two beams from the Trade Center… I overheard this Mom explaining to her three little boys the meaning of the twisted pieces of metal they were looking at, and why they had come to this place full of motorcycles this morning.  It brought tears to my eyes and reminded me of the man explaining to his little girl at the WWII Memorial what the field of stars represented.

One thing I did hear clearly from the stage was a reminder that while many of us will stop and thank someone in military service…we seldom thank those on the frontlines here at home…our Police Officers and Firefighters.  They too serve, are volunteers and leave home not knowing what awaits them in the course of their duty.  We need to remember them and thank them.

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

It’s hard to believe it’s been 7 years.   And…I think there are those that have forgotten..or at least…who have not given much thought to that terrible day and what it represents.  It is much easier not to think about it…not to look at the photographs and the videos.  But we need to.  Because as cliche as it may be, “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Thank You…all who serve…military and civilian.

*With a little luck, there may be video to come…we’ll see!

“I just can’t believe it,” said Nicole Cote, mother of L/Cpl. McCoughn. “It’s not supposed to happen this way. Your kids aren’t supposed to leave you.” McCoughn joined the USMC during his Senior year of High School. “He said he needed to do this. He said if he could keep one dad from going to Iraq and he could take his place instead, then he’ll feel like he’s accomplished something.”

Lance Cpl. Ryan T. McCaughn was killed on November 7, 2006 while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. He leaves behind his mother, father, step-father and two brothers.

I HAZ A PONDER...A SERIOUS ONE

My ponder is over an email I got from a friend promoting a petition for a National GOP Primary.  On the face of it I thought it a sensible and logical idea. “The purpose of this petition is to encourage the RNC to create a one day National Presidential primary that will allow every registered Republican the opportunity to vote for the GOP candidate that best represents their beliefs before the candidate chooses to drop out of the race.”

And then I discussed it with another friend who pointed out “…why should we continue to bother having 50 states?  It’s just another example of giving strength (albeit, in a subtle, different form) to a central government, than the individualism of the 50 states. The current national campaigning practice of swinging into an area, promise whatever the locals want, and move on… and promise differently to others…. it IS the way we should be. Kentucky does NOT equal Idaho does NOT equal Maine does NOT equal Kansas etc etc. Also, it gives equal weight to each state. While RI will be pleased, how do you think CA or TX will feel? PA? OH? Perhaps we should return to conventions meaning something, rather than being 4 day $100 million infomercials? There used to not be primaries… it was decided at the convention.”

I remember those conventions.

And now…I am pondering.
